Overview
The Nyala is a shy, medium-sized antelope known for its striking sexual dimorphism. Males are dark brown to slate grey with spiral yellow-tipped horns (up to 83 cm), while females and young are reddish-brown with white vertical stripes. Adult males can weigh up to 140 kg, females up to 55 kg.

Preferring dense woodlands and thickets near water, Nyala are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. They feed on leaves, fruit, and grasses and are especially dependent on water sources. Typically, non-territorial, they live alone or in small family groups of up to 10.

Nyala are cautious by nature. Females emit sharp, dog-like barks to alert others of danger and will also respond to alarm calls from species like impalas and baboons.
