Steenbok

Overview
The Steenbok, also known as the Steinbuck, is a small antelope, standing 45–60 cm (16″-24″) at the shoulder. Its coat ranges from fawn to rufous with a white underside and a distinct white ring around the eyes. Males sport straight, parallel horns 3”-8” long. A black crescent between the ears and a glossy black nose add to its unique appearance. The tail is very short.

Active both day and night, Steenbok rest in the shade during the heat of the day. In the dry season, they feed more at night. When threatened, they lie low in the vegetation, then leap away in a zigzag pattern to evade predators. Steenbok may also seek refuge in aardvark burrows to escape danger.
