Overview
Burchell’s zebra is a striking grazer with broader body stripes than the Cape Mountain zebra, extending around the belly.
Key Features:
Size: Stands 1.3 to 1.4 meters at the shoulder and weighs 300–320 kg.
Distinctive Markings: Rounded ears (160–170 mm) and a black tuft on the front portion of the mane.
Behaviour:
Diet: Primarily feeds on short grass using its sensitive upper lip to gather herbage.
Breeding: Foals are born year-round, with peak births in summer. After a 360–390-day gestation, foals weigh 30–35 kg and are weaned at 11 months.
Social Structure: Small family units, typically consisting of one stallion, one mare, and their foals. Non-breeding stallions form bachelor groups.
Habitat:
Preferred Areas: Open savanna woodlands and grassland plains, typically within 10–12 km of water.
Associations: Commonly seen alongside wildebeest, other antelope, and baboons.
Lifespan: Around 20 years in the wild.
Range: Found in southern Africa, with a distribution separate from the Cape Mountain Zebra, which inhabits the Cape mountains.
