Lechwe
Overview
The lechwe is a marsh-dwelling antelope, standing 90–100 cm at the shoulder and weighing 70–120 kg. Golden-brown with white underparts, males are darker and sport long, spiral-shaped, lyre-like horns. Their hind legs are longer than those of most antelopes, aiding in fast movement through water.
Adapted to wetland life, lechwe live in knee-deep water and feed on aquatic plants. Their water-repellent legs help them outrun predators in marshy terrain. Lechwe are active during the day and often form large single-sex herds. During mating season, males and females mix.
