Overview
The Red Duiker, also known as the Natal Red Duiker, is a small, reddish-brown antelope found in dense forests and thick bush across central to southern Africa. Smaller than the Common Duiker, it stands about 43 cm at the shoulder and weighs around 14 kg.
Distinctive Appearance
Its rich red coat, hunched posture, and short, straight horns make it easily recognizable. A white-tipped tail and a tuft of dark and red hair between the horns complete its striking look.
Behaviour and Habitat
Unlike most forest duikers, the Red Duiker is more diurnal and less secretive, making it easier to spot. It lives alone or in pairs, moving quietly through dense undergrowth. When threatened, it uses powerful hind legs to leap quickly into cover. Its alarm call—a sharp snort or whistle—is unmistakable.
